The Outspan hospital is the only hospital that has a department of psychology in the whole Mt. Kenya region. The psychology department came about due to the hospital’s need to give their patients, health care that is holistic in nature. In pursuit of the holistic healthcare, the hospital realized that the patients not only required physical care but their mental health also needed to be taken care of. As a result, the department of psychology at Outspan hospital was opened in August 2009. It will cater to both In-patients and Out-patients.

Therapy or counseling often deals with issues which are inhibiting an individual’s ability to function in a certain aspect of their life. The therapeutic services offered by the department of psychology are not simply to relieve the symptoms of emotional and psychological problems presented by the clients, but they are also after minimizing the recurrence or at the very least manage the recurring symptoms more effectively in the future.

 

The department has a highly qualified team comprised of three psychologists and two seasoned counselors. The department will be offering a wide range of therapeutic services to their clients, these services will include;

  • Chemical dependency (drug and substance abuse) counselling
  • Adolescent/youth counselling
  • Grief, loss and bereavement counsellig
  • VCT/HIV counselling
  • Family and Marriage counselling
  • Trauma counselling
  • Stress management
  • Anger management
  • Psychological assessment
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Outreach programs- talks to schools, corporate organizations, churches

The department will be open Mondays to Fridays 8.30am to 6.00pm and Saturdays 9.00am to 5.00 pm. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for information concerning how to make an appointment to see a counselor.New clients  will be asked to come into the psychology office(in the Outspan Hospital adminstration block) for an initial interview. This usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. The initial interview provides an opportunity to discuss present concerns, as well as relevant background information in a confidential setting. This session will lead to a recommendation regarding further services and a mutually agreed upon decision as to how the counseling center can best help you.Crisis Intervention services are available on a 24 hour basis without appointment.
